Internet Packet Loss: Measurement and Implications for End-to-End QoS
نویسندگان
چکیده
We analyze a month of Internet packet loss statistics for speech transmission using three different sets of transmitter/receiver host pairs. Our results indicate that packet loss is highly bursty, with the majority of individual losses occurring in a relatively small number of bursts. We find that loss exhibits dependence in most cases, but is not always wellmodeled as dependent. We introduce an analytical technique for measuring loss dependency. We also consider the asymmetry of round-trip packet loss, and find that most loss on a round-trip path occurs in either one direction or the other. We introduce a normalized metric for measuring loss asymmetry and apply it to our measurements. Finally we discuss the implications of our study for the next generation of real-time voice services in the Internet.

A Fuzzy Based Three Color Meter/Marker for Diffserv Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)
Differentiated Services (Diffserv) which was proposed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), is a scalable and robust model for providing the end-to-end QoS. In the Diffserv networks, metering mechanisms are used to measure traffic stream. The single rate Three Color Meter (srTCM) [1],which was proposed by IETF, meters an IP packet stream and marks its packets either green, yellow, or red....
متن کاملQoS Improvement Schemes for Real-Time Wireless VoIP
There is a tremendous demand on real-time multimedia delivery over wireless Internet due to the dramatic increase in wireless communication and the growth of the Internet. However, real-time multimedia over wireless Internet poses many challenges. First of all, the inherent best-effort characteristic of packet-switched networks makes it difficult to provide guaranteed QoS for real-time multimed...
متن کاملFeature Extraction to Identify Network Traffic with Considering Packet Loss Effects
There are huge petitions of network traffic coming from various applications on Internet. In dealing with this volume of network traffic, network management plays a crucial rule. Traffic classification is a basic technique which is used by Internet service providers (ISP) to manage network resources and to guarantee Internet security. In addition, growing bandwidth usage, at one hand, and limit...
متن کاملRSVP and Integrated Services in the Internet : a tutorial
The growing use of multimedia communication applications with specific bandwidth and real-time delivery requirements has created the need for an Integrated Services Internet in which traditional best-effort datagram delivery can coexist with additional enhanced Quality Of Service(QOS) delivery classes. Such classes provide data flows with QOS commitments with regard to bandwidth, packet loss an...
متن کاملRouting and admission control with multiconstrained end-to-end quality of service in MPLS networks
Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) networks require dynamic flow admission control to guarantee end-to-end quality of service (QoS) for each Internet protocol (IP) traffic flow. In this paper, we propose to tackle the joint routing and admission control problem for the IP traffic flows in MPLS networks with multiconstrained end-to-end QoS. We propose a mathematical programming model for this ...
